Objectives
Following completion of this one day of seminars and a wet lab, the participants will gain experience and comfort in:
- variations in premedication and induction techniques that would be suitable in special circumstances
- selecting patients that would benefit by use of CRI drug administration during anesthetic management
- monitoring the anesthetised patient and interpreting the results appropriately
- dealing with anesthetic complications such as hypotension, arrhythmias, hypoglycemia and others
- setting up, administering and monitoring a patient with a CRI of propofol, dopamine, fentanyl and lidocaine
- indications, concerns and placement of local blocks and epidural injections
- dealing with the patient with either preoperative or postoperative signs of acute pain
- considering the financial impact of different choices for anesthetic management
Methods
The lab will involve live animals and cadavers. Demonstrations and “hands on” opportunities for learning will be provided. Veterinarians and technicians in the lab are available for questions throughout. A short debrief / question and answer period will be incorporated into the lab period if time allows. A final debrief / question and answer period is scheduled for the end of the day related to all the aspects of this program.
Preparation for lab
All individuals will have received an introductory lecture on continuous rate infusions during anesthesia and monitors/monitoring during anesthesia. Discussions and demonstrations during the lab will clarify other learning objectives.
This program includes approximately 5 hours of lecture/discussion and a 2.5 hour lab.
